Imokhai Okolo is an experienced trial attorney with a breadth of knowledge and expertise litigating and counseling clients through complex legal matters. Imokhai prides himself on being a powerful community organizer and social justice activist who has been on the front lines fighting for criminal justice reform, housing justice, and for the dignity and humanity of marginalized communities. Imokhai has a wide variety of expertise working across the legal field from corporate defense, government service, criminal defense, and court administration. Imokhai’s depth of experience has given him the knowledge and perspective to tackle some of the most challenging legal problems in a variety of practice areas.

Imokhai began his career as a corporate attorney at one of the world’s largest and premiere global law firms, Jones Day. As a corporate attorney, Imokhai’s practice focused primarily on complex civil litigation and product liability defense, while also representing fortune 500 companies in investigations by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Imokhai also maintained an active pro bono practice counseling major metropolitan cities on constitutional policing and civil justice reform issues, while also representing clients seeking asylum in the United States, and indigent clients facing eviction in Northeast Ohio.

After obtaining an undergraduate degree from Miami University (Oxford Ohio), Imokhai earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Akron where he graduated in the top of his class. While there, Imokhai received numerous national awards including a national championship in trial advocacy, was a member of the Akron Law Review, externed for Judge Solomon Oliver on the United Stated District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, represented clients facing eviction through the civil practice clinic, counseled small businesses through the entrepreneurship clinic, was the student director for the Re-entry Clinic, and served as President of the Black Law Students Association. Upon graduation, Imokhai was recruited by the top law firms in the country for employment.

In addition to his legal career, Imokhai has spent his free time volunteering within the community and working with nonprofits organizing around various social justice issues. Imokhai has served on the Executive Leadership Team for the Akron Urban League Young Professionals, served on the City of Akron Eviction Taskforce, served on a subcommittee for the City of Akron Racial Equity and Social Justice Taskforce, served on the Advisory Committee for the national Law School Admission Council, coached mock trial at Case Western Reserve University and the University of Akron School of Law, and has been a field organizer for Ohio’s largest citizen-led ballot initiative known as “Issue 1” in 2018.

Given Imokhai’s success in the legal industry and work in the community, he has been sought after to speak at various events and conferences. Imokhai has spoken at the Ohio Supreme Court, has taught trial advocacy to students and practicing attorneys, and has given lectures on his community organizing work at the University of Akron, Miami University, and Kent State University.
